Ricardo Hernandez and the Baseball Field
Ricardo Hernandez doesn’t think he is a champion. But just ask Kansas City, Missouri Mayor Carl Wilkes, or catch up with Mark McGuire and see what they’d have to say. If you still want to know, talk with his friends and neighbors: I bet they think he’s one heck of a champion. Do you really think that the nationally-acclaimed newspaper, The Kansas City Star, would have put him on the cover page of their Sunday Star Magazine along with an eight-page article and several color photos, if he weren’t a champion?
What made this appealing and resolute baseball fan endearing to so many people was his dream to have a baseball field in his back yard. To Ricardo, who has cerebral palsy, overcoming surgeries and long hospital stays, enduring the pain of physical therapy and the dependency on his wheelchair were not obstacles in his path towards his own field of dreams. All it took was his determination and with the help from the volunteers of The Dream Factory of Greater Kansas City his dream came true.
